Kudos To Douglas County Commissioners!

Background: Originally published December 20, 2006. This is a follow-up column to my previous blog entry, "Commissioner Kittelman's Private Committee Goes Public."

Douglas County Commissioners are to be commended for their decision last week to rescind their formation of a "private" O & C safety net committee. In Oregon, a public body can not create a private body. Any panel or group of people that is created by a public body is subject to Oregon Public Meetings laws.
Recognizing that fact, Douglas County Commissioners last week withdrew their support of an advisory committee created by Douglas County Commissioner Marilyn Kittelman. Apparently, the group's ability to meet in secret was more important than the entire board of commissioners sanctioning the committee.
The O & C advisory committee is once again a private group entitled to meet behind closed doors. And, commissioners have stated that any group that wants to work on the O & C safety net crisis, will receive the same waived research charges and waived copying fees that will be granted to Kittelman's private advisory group.
