I have decided to vote yes on Oregon ballot measure 92. It would require the labeling of GMOs (growth modifying organisms) on food sold in Oregon. It is simply an extension of current requirements for the labeling of ingredients on all commercial food products.
GMOs are a serious health concern for people with some diseases, such as cancer. Livestock are routinely fed growth hormones and given antibiotics; both can stimulate the growth of cancer cells in people with cancer. Produce as well is sometimes genetically modified, which again can play havoc for the compromised immune systems of those fighting a disease.
People have a right to know what they're putting in their bodies. And for some, the presence (or lack of presence) of GMOs can be a life and death issue. Please vote yes on measure 92. It's not a political issue. It's a health issue.
Thanks, but no thanks. I contacted the Yes on 92 campaign office in Portland to see if there was some place locally where I could pick up a yard sign. The campaign office referred me to a website that charges TEN DOLLARS for a yard sign! I realize that some political campaigns have shoestring budgets, but this the first time that any campaign has ever wanted to charge me for a yard sign. When I ran for county commissioner, I could have ordered bulk custom-made yard signs for less than five dollars each.
ReplyDeleteYou could have got the yard sign and look at the $10 as a donation to the cause, silly. A lot of serious people gave $10, $35, $100, even $1,000 and some companies like Clif Bar gave $100,000, Dr. Bronner's Soaps gave over a million but Dow, Dupont, Monsanto, Coke, Pepsi and others gave over $27,000,000 and Measure 92 is within a mere 0.3% in votes to cause a recount. Monte, you're full of yourself. All this complaining over contributing $10 for a yard sign. Wow!
DeleteThanks for your input. If I ever able to hold down a down a job after my battle with stage four cancer, I'll be sure and be more philanthropic with my money. When a person receives Social Security Disability as their only source of income, which is LESS than Oregon's minimum wage for a full-time worker, $10.00 seems like a lot of money.
DeleteSomeone with the Yes on 92 campaign unexpectedly dropped off a yard sign on our front doorstep last weekend! Now we've got a Yes on 92 sign in our yard. I haven't seen any other Measure 92 signs around the area...they're kind of colorful: a map of Oregon with a fish and an apple on the side.
